All proceeds from the event will go to Special Olympics of Pennsylvania (SOPA), whose mission is described below from their website. The CMUPD has been involved with SOPA for many years with our Police Officers, Security Officers, Dispatchers and families volunteering for a number of SOPA activities. Most significantly, we have participated in the annual Pittsburgh Polar Plunge which, through the efforts of many local police departments and crazy people, raises a huge amount of money annually for Special Olympic activities. Last year's event raised over almost $400,000. The CMUPD, since becoming involved, has raised over $30,000 through the efforts of its members and the generosity of the CMU community. Our members also volunteer for a number of the actual competition events that are held locally. Most importantly, the Special Olympic Spring Games which CMU began hosting in 2016. Last year's event brought 525 Special Athletes from Western Pa. to CMU to compete in field and track events, basketball, swimming, golf and tennis. Over 400 CMU students and staff volunteered to make this event a tremendous community and Special Olympic success. This year's event is scheduled for Saturday, April 29. Any CMU community member can volunteer to participate.

Why Culture Matters: The Challenges & Benefits of Cultivating Inclusion in STEM Fields
1-2:30 p.m.
McConomy Auditorium, CUC (1st Floor)
Hosted by: The Information Networking Institute (INI)
Moderator: Mike Bruce, Chairman and CEO of InScope International, Inc. and INI alumnus (Class of 1995)
Panelists:
Dena Haritos Tsamitis, Director of the Information Networking Institute (INI), Founding Director, Education, Training and Outreach, CyLab
Joyce Brocaglia, Founder and CEO of Alta Associates
Uma Gupta, Corporate Trainer, Consultant & Professor
Audrey Russo, President & CEO, Pittsburgh Technology Council Moderator

Innovations emerging from engineering and technology fields have positively influenced nearly every facet of human life. At a time when science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) jobs are growing faster than any other U.S. sector – employment is expected to grow by 9 million between 2012 and 2022 – we are not producing the diverse pool of technologists and engineers necessary to meet this demand. Led by Dena Haritos Tsamitis, director of the Information Networking Institute (INI), this panel will explore the challenges and benefits of cultivating inclusion in STEM fields. With over a decade of work fostering diversity and inclusion at the INI, including the founding of Women@INI in 2005, Tsamitis is a strong proponent of the belief that culture matters. From increased productivity to innovative problem-solving, research shows that diversity in the workplace has a myriad of benefits. As leaders, we must create awareness and advance best practices to inspire an inclusive culture in the emerging workforce.
